CCT Essay : "What is Creativity"

Creativity derives from the word creative. And creative is a result from originality of thought, expression and imagination.

More often than not, we can see creativity everywhere. Like for an instance, posters on the streets, or perhaps, our daily life kitchen appliances. The ability to transcend traditional ideas, rules, patterns and coming up with meaningful new ideas, that is creativity. Everyone has creativity in them, more or less. It just depends on how you make us of them, or whether or not you need them often.

A fashion designer is someone who always has to stretch their creativity to come up with a design of originality; it’s already part of their life to constantly use their creativity. And of course, they are not more creative than us. They just know how to make use of their creativity to create something that is deemed valuable to others.

Likewise for artist, although they get their inspirations from things, they still have to use their creativity to portrait the thing into a piece of art. The paper used, the colors needed, all these needs to be taken in to consideration. Although creativity plays a part in the process, years of practice is needed to perfect a drawing. For someone who has an abundant amount of creativity but with no adept skills in drawings; their work will forever be something simple.

Therefore, I conclude that although creativity is important in our life, without the necessary skills, the product will never be something meaningful. Imagine if Thomas Edison didn’t possess the skills necessary to create light bulb, will we still have light today? He has the creativity, but without the skills, he wouldn’t be able to create the light bulb.

And of course, you need confidence as well, because creative ideas might not always be accepted by the others. You need confidence to sell your new products into the market and must be open to all criticism.

So, my conclusion is that creativity is not just by itself. It’s dependent on many other factors too. And it’s up to us to decide where we use it and how we use it.
